TALL TINES TUBERS is designed to provide deer with not one but TWO FOOD SOURCES for late fall, and lasting through winter in most parts of North America:  forage and tubers.  And like all Whitetail Institute forage products, you can be certain that TALL TINES TUBERS is the result of the same exhaustive research and development, and that it passed all stages of the real-world testing, that all Whitetail Institute products must pass.
The turnip variety in TALL TINES TUBERS is not just another commodity-seed type turnip.  Commodity type seeds often packaged as food-plot products for deer were generally developed either for grazing by livestock, or for harvest, and the types of turnips that have historically been planted for deer have been of the harvest variety.
The new turnip variety in TALL TINES TUBERS was developed over six years of exhaustive research and development, and testing under real-world conditions on wild, free-ranging deer across the U.S. and Canada to be sure that it would be as productive and attractive to deer as possible.
Research and development started with identifying specific traits that would make the new turnip variety ideal for whitetail food plots. These included rapid stand establishment, cold-tolerance and most importantly attractiveness to whitetails.  These “parent” turnip varieties were then planted in areas accessible to wild, free-ranging deer.
The Institute tests candidate plants for forage blends on wild deer.  There is no harder way to develop new plant varieties than to allow deer to feed on the plants while research and selection are ongoing.  That's because once deer find a plant attractive, they can keep it grazed so low that it can't produce the seed the scientists need for additional selection and plant breeding.  Even though conducting research and development on wild, free ranging deer is very difficult, the Whitetail Institute does it anyway, and for one reason:  there is simply no other way to know what forages deer will prefer unless you allow wild, free-ranging deer to make their own selection.
In developing TALL TINES TUBERS, candidate turnips were planted in plots available to wild, free ranging deer and then closely monitored for deer usage.  Plants for which deer exhibited a marked preference were isolated from further grazing with exclusion cages, allowing those plants to mature and produce seed.  Exclusion cages also allowed continuing evaluation of other traits important for deer food plots, including rapid stand establishment, early plant vigor, and resistance to disease, insects, heat, drought and cold.  Plants that did not meet the Institute's strict testing requirements were eliminated at each selection cycle.Tests on wild-free ranging deer proved to the Whitetail Institute's Research and Development Team, and to the Institute's Certified Research Stations across North America, that their efforts had created the most productive, attractive, and cold-tolerant turnip product possible.  After six years of exhaustive research, development and testing, TALL TINES TUBERS met all of the Institute's strict requirements and is now available to the public as TALL TINES TUBERS.
The new turnip variety is only available in Whitetail Institute products. This seed by the pound will not be in the original bag.
