Offered in this sale is a signed letter sent by Edwin B Dooley in his position as a member of the House of Representatives in 1959 to a committeeman in Port Chester New York in 1959. Following is some text that I copied and pasted from another on-line letter signed by Dooley which gives some biographical information about him.
Mr. Dooley maintained a lifelong interest in sports.Born in Brooklyn, he went from St. John's Preparatory School to Dartmouth College, where as a quarterback, he was named an All-American. He also played basketball and was an accomplished horseman.He graduated from Dartmouth in 1927 and then entered Fordham Law School, where he received his degree. Wrote Sports FeaturesWhile Mr. Dooley was in law school, and for many years afterward while he was practicing law, he was a radio sports announcer. For a dozen years, he also wrote sports features for The New York Sun.A longtime resident of Mamaroneck, N.Y., where he entered politics, he was elected Mayor in 1950. He held the office for six years. In 1956, he was elected to the House, and served for three terms before losing a Republican primary to Ogden R. Reid. After his defeat, Mr. Dooley was active as a lobbyist in Washington until his appointment in 1966 by Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller as chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, which regulates professional boxing and wrestling. Controversies as Commissioner. In that post, he became embroiled in several controversies. In 1967, he suspended the license of Cassius Clay -later Muhammad Ali - then the heavyweight boxing champion for refusing to be drafted into the Army.In 1972, reversing a long standing state policy, Mr. Dooley permitted women who were sports reporters to occupy ringside seats reserved for the press and to enter dressing rooms provided that 'the male contestants are properly attired.''Mr. Dooley headed a number of sports and fraternal organizations. He was a president of the Touchdown Club of America and was a Knight of Malta.SOURCE NY TIMES
The letter comes with the original House of Representatives envelope it was sent in and is also signed by Dooley. In the letter Dooley discusses the value of the dollar, defense spending, housing and taxes. The condition of the letter and envelope is as seen in the photographs. The letter is fine. The envelope looks as if it may have at one point been mounted in a collectors album, however, the signature is complete.
